Once upon a time (not too long ago), C was the number one programming language on the Tiobe Index. In recent years, however, the language's popularity had been steadily declining, and in August, it slipped to its lowest rating ever: 6.477 percent. Since then, C has been on a tear, climbing back up to 11.07 percent and second place on the index. That dramatic rise made C the language with the fastest-growing popularity this year, which earns it the title of Tiobe Programming Language of the Year for 2017.
C beat out second place Python and third place Erlang. R and Kotlin also made big gains.
