The Leading Contributors to Open Source, Ranked

Microsoft leads the pack.

Adobe developer Fil Maj has published a new analysis of GitHub data that offers a look at which companies are contributing the most to open source projects. Other people and organizations have published other analyses that used different methodologies, but Maj's is based on the company field in the profiles of active GitHub developers (those who made 10 or more commits to public projects in 2017). Based on that data, here are the top 20 companies with the most employees contributing to open source:

  1. Microsoft — 4,550 employees
  2. Google — 2,267 employees
  3. Red Hat — 2,027 employees
  4. IBM — 1,813 employees
  5. Intel — 1,314 employees
  6. Amazon.com — 881 employees
  7. SAP — 747 employees
  8. ThoughtWorks — 739 employees
  9. Alibaba — 694 employees
  10. GitHub — 676 employees
  11. Facebook — 619 employees
  12. Tencent — 605 employees
  13. Pivotal — 591 employees
  14. EPAM Systems — 585 employees
  15. Baidu — 584 employees
  16. Mozilla — 469 employees
  17. Oracle — 455 employees
  18. Unity Technologies — 414 employees
  19. Uber — 388 employees
  20. Yandex — 351 employees
