Smartphone owners use their devices to access data much more often than for talking.

According to a new survey conducted by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), smartphone owners say they spend much more time interacting with apps than using their phones for talking. The most popular use for a smartphone was to check the weather, cited by 73 percent of smartphone owners. Other top app categories included social networking (60 percent), games (57 percent), photo and video (55 percent) and navigation (55 percent).

Currently, 66 percent of people in the U.S. say they own smartphones. Among those who do not own the devices yet, 61 percent expect to purchase a smartphone at some point in the future. While the smartphone market will eventually reach a saturation point, the CEA predicts that the mobile development industry should benefit from continuing increases in smartphone ownership at least through the end of next year.
