In its fourth annual Android Fragmentation Report, OpenSignal found that people are now using 24,095 different Android devices manufactured by 1,294 different companies. Just three years ago, there were only 11,868 kinds of Android devices in use, and 1,000 of those device brands around today didn't even exist then.
Samsung remains the most popular Android brand, but its market share is shrinking. In 2015 it had 37.8 percent of the Android device market, down from 47 percent in 2012.
For mobile development firms, creating apps that will work on all those different devices remains a significant challenge. According to Google, the KitKat and Jelly Bean versions of Android are currently the most commonly used.
