Shakeups on Google's AI Team

The reorg points to the growing importance of artificial intelligence at Google.

Several news outlets are reporting that John Giannandrea, who used to lead Google's search and artificial intelligence (AI) business unit, is leaving his position. The unit will now be split into two with Ben Gomes, the current vice president of search engineering, heading up the search group. Jeff Dean from Google Brain will be in charge of AI efforts.

Despite his replacement, Giannandrea plans to stay on at Google in a role that will allow him to be more hands on with technology.
