Perl, PHP and Ruby are experiencing popularity declines.

The latest update to the Tiobe index of programming language popularity highlights a trend in regards to scripting languages. With the exception of JavaScript and Python, most scripting languages, including PHP, Ruby and Perl, are experiencing declines in popularity. “Because quality demands are getting higher and higher, hardly anybody dares to write a critical and large software system in a scripting language nowadays,” the Tiobe report said.

The top ten on the index for November were Java (13.231 percent), C (9.293 percent), C++ (5.343 percent), Python (4.482 percent), C# (3.012 percent), JavaScript (2.972 percent), Visual Basic .Net (2.909 percent), PHP (1.897 percent) Delphi/Object Pascal (1.744 percent) and Assembly language (1.722 percent).
