More Mobile Internet Users than Desktop Users, Report Says

by Developer.com Staff

Web developers have more reasons than ever to design their sites and Web apps for smartphone and tablet users.

For the first time ever, Internet monitoring firm StatCounter says that there is more Internet traffic from mobile devices than from desktop devices. In its most recent report, the firm found that smartphone and tablet users accounted for 51.2 percent of Web traffic, compared to 48.7 for desktop users. In some parts of the world, the mobile percentage was much higher; in India, for example, mobile devices account for 75 percent of usage.

Some analysts say that this is a wakeup call for Web developers who haven't yet adopted a "mobile first" philosophy.
