A Look Back at Mobile Development in 2011

In many ways, the past year was a big turning point for the smartphone market.

In 2011, the mobile industry passed a big milestone -- it was the first year that smartphone and tablet sales outpaced desktop and laptop sales. It was also the first year that smartphone users spent more time with apps (81 minutes per day) than browsing the Web (74 minutes per day). In addition, apps went international, with the U.S. accounting for less than half of all app downloads by the end of the year?

What should we look for in 2012? Localization, voice control, NFC and niche app stores may become big news.
