Microsoft to Unify Its Windows Development Platforms

by Developer.com Staff

What does "one Windows" really mean?

During Tuesday's Microsoft earnings call, CEO Satya Nadella generated a huge amount of interest when he said, "We will streamline the next version of Windows from three operating systems into one single converged operating system for screens of all sizes."

ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley explains that this comment doesn't mean that there will be only one Windows SKU. Instead, all of the versions of Windows, including Windows Phone and Xbox, will share a common core and a single team of people will be responsible for its development. For developers, it will mean a unified platform and the ability to write an app once have it run on all Windows devices, including desktops, laptops, tablets, phones and Xbox. In addition, Microsoft will have a single app store where consumers can buy apps for all of their Windows devices.
