Microsoft Flip-flops on OpenKinect Open Source Driver Threats

by Keith Vance

First, Microsoft got mad and threatened to sue anyone who created open source drivers for their Kinect controller. Now they're fine with it.

When open source DIY electronics company Adafruit launched the OpenKinect open source project, Microsoft was not happy and threatened lawsuits. But now Microsoft has calmed down and they're totally cool with OpenKinect.

On Saturday, two Microsoft representatives were on NPR's Science Daily radio show hosted by Ira Flatow. Flatow asked them if anyone was going to get sued for making open source drivers for Kinect.

"No one is going to get in trouble," Microsoft Program Manager Alex Kipman said. "Nope. Absolutely not."
