Microsoft Cancels Project Astoria

by Developer.com Staff

It is no longer building a bridge to port Android apps to Windows.

Microsoft has announced that it has stopped work on Project Astoria, its effort to create a tool that would make it easy to port Android apps to Windows. The company first announced the project at Build 2015, where it said it was building "bridges" to help port apps from various other platforms to Windows. Microsoft has created the iOS bridge, but in November it announced that the Android bridge was delayed.

Some industry observers wonder whether Microsoft was worried about legal issues related to Project Astoria.

Developers do have other options for porting Android apps to Windows, including using the Xamarin mobile development platform, which Microsoft recently purchased.
