In a blog post, Kent Walker, Google senior vice president and general counsel, said that Google has responded to the European Union's investigation into the company's handling of Android. The EU had alleged that Google was stifling competition by incentivizing manufacturers to include Google services on mobile devices running the Android operating system.
"The response we filed today shows how the Android ecosystem carefully balances the interests of users, developers, hardware makers, and mobile network operators. Android hasn’t hurt competition, it’s expanded it," Walker wrote.
Walker added that Apple's iOS is a chief competitor for Android. "To ignore competition with Apple is to miss the defining feature of today’s competitive smartphone landscape," he said.
The EU's eventual decision in the case could have implications for the mobile development industry.
