According to a new report from App Annie, Google Play had 10 percent more downloads than Apple's App Store in the second quarter of this year. That's the first time Google Play has beat its rival in downloads.
The reason for the sudden surge at Google Play is Android's growing popularity in emerging markets. In particular, India, Brazil and Russia generated enormous volumes of downloads.
Still, iOS maintains its lead over Android when it comes to revenue. In fact, the App Store brings in 2.3 times as much money for Apple and the mobile development industry as Google Play does.
