Google and MotherCoders Offer Free Coding Training for Moms

The nine-week class will teach HTML, CSS and JavaScript skills — and it has free childcare.

Google is countering the recent bad press about its record in regards to its treatment of women by teaming up with nonprofit MotherCoders on a new training opportunity for moms. The two organizations will offer a free, nine-week class that will teach Web development skills like HTML, CSS and JavaScript to mothers in New York City. MotherCoders courses usually cost $7,000 per student, but this one will be paid for by Google and will also have free childcare.

“There’s a huge population of very educated people, but moms tend to get pushed out of the workforce,” said MotherCoders founder Tina Lee. The idea is that developer jobs often have flexible schedules, and that this training will allow mothers to reenter the workforce, change careers or start their own companies.

Despite the name, MotherCoders provides training for all women, not just moms.
