Gartner: Android, iOS Dominate Smartphone Sales

by Developer.com Staff

Chinese smartphone sales declined for the first time ever.

Market research firm Gartner has released its latest quarterly smartphone sales report, and it shows that Android and iOS continue to dominate the market. In the second quarter of 2015, 82.2 percent of smartphones sold ran Android, a slight decline from an 83.8 percent market share in the second quarter of 2015. Apple's iOS saw a year-over-year increase from 12.2 percent to 14.6 percent. Windows fell from 0.7 percent to 0.3 percent, and BlackBerry declined from 0.7 percent to 0.3 percent, while others also slipped from 0.5 percent to 0.4 percent of the market.

The report noted that smartphone sales grew at just 13 percent overall—the slowest growth rate since 2013. In addition, smartphone sales actually declined in China, although sales of iPhones did increase. Gartner says this suggests that the market has "reached saturation."
