$1.3 trillion in spending will be directly or indirectly tied to cloud computing.

According to a new report from Gartner, cloud computing continues to consume ever-larger proportions of enterprise IT spending. The analyst firm said that by 2022, 28 percent of enterprise IT spending will go to cloud computing services, up from 19 percent this year. In addition, more than $1.3 trillion in purchases will be related in some way to the cloud within five years.

“The shift of enterprise IT spending to new, cloud-based alternatives is relentless, although it’s occurring over the course of many years due to the nature of traditional enterprise IT,” said Michael Warrilow, research vice president at Gartner. “Cloud shift highlights the appeal of greater flexibility and agility, which is perceived as a benefit of on-demand capacity and pay-as-you-go pricing in cloud.”
