App intelligence vendor Sensor Tower has published a new report which predicts that Apple's App Store will have 5 million apps by 2020. To put that number in perspective, by the end of this year, the App Store will likely include 2.93 million apps. And at the end of the store's first year in existence, 2008, it had just 5,000 apps.
By far the most active category for new apps is games. In May, mobile development firms debuted 20,958 new iOS games, or 43 percent of the 48,231 total apps released during the month. The second place category was education, which had only 2,472 new apps.
Despite the influx of new apps available, smartphone users are downloading fewer apps. A study by Tune said that users download an average of 1.5 new apps per month while a separate report from comScore said the average was closer to zero.
