Fitness Tracker Sales Rise as Smartwatches Decline

Fitbit remains the top wearables vendor.

A new IDC report on wearable sales finds that sales of basic wearables (including fitness trackers) rose 48 percent in the second quarter while sales of smart wearables (including smartwatches) declined 27 percent. “Basic wearables, which include most fitness trackers, have benefited from a combination of factors: a clear value proposition for end-users, an abundant selection of devices from multiple vendors, and affordable price points,” said IDC’s Research Manager for Wearables Ramon Llamas.

During the second quarter, Fitbit sold 5.7 million wearables, a 28 percent year-over-year increase that kept it number one in the market. In second place, Xiaomi experienced only 2.5 percent growth, while Apple saw a 56 percent decline in sales.
