At the U.S. National Governors Association meeting, Tesla and Space X CEO Elon Musk asked politicians to pass sweeping regulation governing the development of artificial intelligence (AI). He said that AI is a "fundamental risk to the existence of human civilization." He added, "I have exposure to the very most cutting-edge AI and I think people should be really concerned about it. I keep sounding like an alarm bell, but until people see robots going down the street killing people, they don't know how to react because it seems so ethereal."
He said that companies are in a race to build the best AI in order to remain competitive. He told the governors, "That's where you need the regulators to come in say, 'Hey guys, you all need to pause and make sure this is safe, and when it's cool and the regulator is convinced this is safe to proceed, then you can go, but otherwise slow down'."
