Connected homes will likely drive much of that growth.

Cisco's latest Visual Networking Index report predicts strong growth for the Internet of Things. It forecasts that IoT devices will comprise half of the total 27.1 billion connected devices that will be in existence in 2021. "While there is and has been a lot of hype around the internet of things, it is definitely real," Thomas Barnett, Jr., director of thought leadership in Cisco Systems' SP marketing group, said. "We're seeing that in our own lives every day."

The report says that by 2021, connected home devices will account for 46 percent of IoT connections. The average North American home will have 23 connected devices by that time, including 13 with machine-to-machine (M2M) connections.
