by Developer.com Staff

Now that Oracle has walked away from OpenSolaris, the Illumos Foundation is said to be kicking off their own fork of OpenSolaris next Tuesday when they plan to announce OpenIndiana.

OpenIndiana is a fork of OpenSolaris. The official unveiling of this new open source project is scheduled for Tuesday Sept. 14, 2010 in London.

OpenIndiana will be part of the Illumos Foundation. It's goal will be to provide an open source alternative to Oracle's proprietary Solaris 11 and Solaris 11 Express operating systems.

The press conference scheduled for Tuesday is expected to to be broadcast live on the Internet. You can learn more about the event here and here.
