What Ludwig is trying to do is carve out a niche in the digital radio marketplace. The company's target audience is ethnic and elderly radio listeners.
The company said that Linux and open source will allow them to leverage the wide array of open source applications to be utilized on their radio, such as JPEG viewer, media players, Web mail and others.
In 2009, the company was granted a patent for a new radio that receives signals from new Digital Television Stations (ATSC also known as HD-TV).
According to the company, "The radios receive 50 channels of audio. Ludwig's programming consists of 40 channels of ethnic talk radio (Filipino, Pakistani, Hebrew, Chinese, Greek, Russian and more). The remaining channels include, in English, old-time radio shows, 24-hour news without commentary, audio books, educational and religious programs plus classical music."
A launch date for the handheld radio device has yet to be announced. The company said there will be a one-time subscription fee, given as a gift, and no monthly fee. The company plans to make its money on advertising.
