Open Source Android Gobbling Up Mobile Market Share

by Developer.com Staff

Android isn't dominating the smartphone market yet, but it's gaining ground very fast.

Google's open source Android smartphone is blowing away the competition in terms of market share.

According to new data by comScore, Android's share of the US smartphone market increased 4 percent - up to 13 percent from 9 percent during the three-month period between February and May.

While the smartphone market as a whole is exploding, only Android is grabbing a bigger slice of the pie. Blackberry fell from 42.1 to 41.7 percent. Even Apple dropped 1 percentage of its market share to Google. Microsoft saw the biggest drop, losing nearly 2 percent of the smartphone market.

According to the report, 49.1 million people in the US own smartphones. That's up 8.1 percent from a year ago.
