VoltDB Launches the Next Generation Open Source Database Servers

by Developer.com Staff

VoltDB is now available. Unlike NoSQL databases, VoltDB understands SQL. Like NoSQL database, VoltDB stores data in memory and not on disk.

Open source VoltDB announced today the general availability of the VoltDB OLTP database management system.

Under the leadership of Postgres and Ingres co-founder, Mike Stonebraker, VoltDB is taking what works with traditional relational databases, tossing out what doesn't and building a high-availability scaleable distributed data storage system.

Unlike the trendy NoSQL databases that have been popping up like dandelions, VoltDB understands SQL and it ensures transactional integrity (ACID).

"VoltDB is ideal for developers of ad serving, gaming, software as a service (SaaS), financial trading, on-line businesses and other systems with large, fast-growing transaction volumes because VoltDB scales out easily on low-cost servers while providing automatic high availability for 24x7 operation," the press release said.
