Google My Tracks GPS Open Sourced

by Developer.com Staff

Google open sources its My Tracks Android GPS software, hoping to leverage the open source community to make the application better.

Google has open sourced its My Tracks Android GPS software under the Apache License 2.0.

My Tracks records your movements with GPS and shows lives statistics such as time, speed, distance and elevation while hiking, cycling, running or strolling on the beach. Your recorded tracks can then be uploaded to Google Spreadsheets and visualized on Google My Maps.

And now that My Tracks is open source, Google Team Member Rodrigo Damazio said, "you can expect My Tracks to become better than ever with the contributions we hope it will receive from other developers."

Damazio said that the project needs translators, developers and testers. On the project's Wiki, there are documents detailing how to contribute to the open source My Tracks project.
