EditShare said that they plan to open sourse the Lightworks video editing software in the third quarter of 2010. Lightworks has been used in several Hollywood productions since its inception in 1989.

EditShare has announced that it intends to open source the Lightworks video editor it acquired last September.

According to The H Open Source, Lightworks is a powerful video editing application that has been used in several Hollywood productions such as the Centurion and Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island.

"Lightworks has been available since 1989," The H reported, "and stands out because of its intuitive user interface, its real-time synchronization and its multi-camera editing features. The software can also exchange data with other video editors such as Avid and Final Cut. By opening the code, EditShare hopes to attract an active community of developers who will add new features to the program. An in-house developer team will check contributed code."

EditShare plans to release the source code in the third quarter of 2010.
