Unix Ownership Confirmed, Novell Said to Continue Protecting the Open Source Community

by Developer.com Staff

Now that Novell is the legal owner of Unix, how will that impact open source Linux?

Earlier this week, a jury ruled that Novell owns the Unix copyrights SCO had been claimed they owned. But while SCO had used those copyright claims to harass the open source Linux community, Novell said they won't do that.

InfoWorld's Savio Rodrigues reported that Novell's Director of Press Relations Ian Bruce said, "We own the copyrights and we will continue to protect the open source community, including Linux."

While Novell has released the code under the Gnu Public License, but questions remain what will happen if Novell is purchased by another company such as Microsoft.
