Lucene Java and Solr Development Have Merged

by Developer.com Staff

Lucene and Solr have been merged into one codebase, but will remain as distinct applications.

Lucid Imagination, the makers of Lucene Java and Solr search, have merged these two project's codebase.

Lucene is a Java search library and Solr is a Web service built on top of the Lucene Java libraries.

While the development code has been merged, the project artifacts will remain distinct.

"Lucene will remain a core search engine Java library and Solr will remain a search server built on top of Lucene," Lucid's statement said.

The Lucid development community hopes that this will greatly simplify development and bug fixing process.

"With merged dev, there is now a single set of committers across both projects. Everyone in both communities can now drive releases – so when Solr releases, Lucene will also release – easing concerns about releasing Solr on a development version of Lucene," Lucid said.
