Will OpenSolaris Wither and Die?

by Developer.com Staff

Oracle's purchase of Sun puts OpenSolaris future in jeopardy along with other open source projects.

That's what the self-proclaimed cyber cynic Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols said today. In his Computerworld column, he said that Oracle will not invest the necessary resources to maintain OpenSolaris.

"I strongly suspect that while Solaris on SPARC will continue on, OpenSolaris on x86 is going to be left to wither on the vine," Vauhan-Nichols said.

Computerworld's cyber cynic said that since Oracle is already an important contributor to Linux, they will simply pilfer what they need from OpenSolaris and merge it into Linux.
