Application Development Tops List of Hot IT Skills for 2012

Among IT managers who plan to hire in the next 12 months, 61 percent are looking for programmers.

In a new survey of 353 IT executives, 29 percent indicated that they planned to add more IT workers in the next 12 months. When asked what type of workers they were likely to hire, 61 percent said they planned to add programmers/application developers to their payrolls, making it the most in-demand IT skill. In particular, employers are looking for those with Web and mobile development skills.

Other top skills from the survey included project management (44 percent), help desk/technical support (35 percent), networking (35 percent), business intelligence (23 percent), data center operations (18 percent), Web 2.0 (18 percent), security (17 percent) and telecommunications (9 percent).
