Apple has started its countdown to 50 billion app downloads. (As of writing, the App Store was near the 49,270,000,000 downloads mark.)
In honor of the benchmark, the company is planning to give away a $10,000 iTunes gift card to whomever downloads the 50 millionth app. And the next 50 people will get $500 each.
Apple has run similar giveaways several times before, most recently in March, when the program inspired iPhone and iPad owners to download approximately 700 million apps in just 15 days.
The Mac Observer notes that 50 billion is "7.2 apps per person on the planet, and that's all the people on all the planet, which Google tells us is currently 6,973,738,433."
