Apple Adds 'Pay Once' Category to App Store

The iPhone maker is highlighting games without in-app purchases.

Apple has added a new section in the App Store called "Pay Once & Play." It highlights games without in-app purchases. Most of the games in the category cost between $3 and $5; it includes favorites like Minecraft Pocket Edition, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Final Fantasy VI.

As studies have revealed that developers made more from in-app purchases than from paid apps, many mobile development firms have moved to a freemium model. But lately mobile gamers have been balking, saying that it's not much fun to pay to win. In addition, the European Commission has been pressuring the industry to stop advertising freemium games as "free."
