App Stores Trade Promotions for Exclusivity

Monday Apr 21st 2014 by Developer.com Staff

Apple and Google are competing for popular game titles.

Mobile development firms that are willing to release an app on just one of the major platforms for a while may be able to get valuable promotion opportunities as a result. Unnamed sources tell The Wall Street Journal that Apple and Google have been negotiating deals with game makers that trade promotions for exclusivity. For example, Plants vs. Zombies 2 had such a deal with the Apple Store, and Cut the Rope 2 had a similar arrangement with Google Play.

Amazon is also getting in on the act. "We work with many developers to bring their apps to the Amazon Appstore, some of which are exclusive to our store," said an Amazon spokeswoman.

Still, some developers don't think the payoff is worth doing an exclusivity deal. Gonzague de Vallois from Gameloft said his firm has considered the deals but "haven't found the case where it makes sense for us."
