John McAfee believes the time has come for a computer programmer to become the President of the United States. The self-proclaimed "eccentric millionaire" has filed the paperwork to run for President as the representative his newly formed Cyber Party and has even set up a candidate website.
McAfee developed the first commercial antivirus software and founded the security firm that bears his name and which is now part of Intel. But in recent years, he has become more well-known for a string of unusual escapades, including playing Russian roulette with a loaded gun in front of a reporter and fleeing Belize where he was wanted on murder charges.
In an interview with Wired, the candidate said that the recent hacks of government agencies show that we need a president who understands technology. He added, "I have many thousands of emails saying please run for President. It’s not something I would just choose to do on my own."
