In a typical month, Android users download 2.5 billion apps from Google Play. By comparison, iOS users download about 2 billion apps from the App Store. At the current rate, Google will have more total downloads than iOS does by October.
This disparity is leading some to conclude that Android will eventually beat iOS in the battle for developers. However, Asymco analyst Horace Dediu, noted, "The total downloads/install base are currently 83 apps per iOS device sold and 53 apps per Android device activation." He continued, "The sheer weight of Android units will generate more downloads but on a per device basis the iOS devices do seem to consume more apps and the gap is not narrowing."
