On the first day of the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show, Google announced a major partnership with automakers General Motors, Audi, Honda and Hyundai, as well as chipmaker Nvidia. The companies have created a group called the Open Auto Alliance (OAA), which will bring Android–and open development—to a large number of vehicles.
For the mobile development industry, this could represent a new and potentially lucrative market for their apps. "The OAA is dedicated to a common platform that will drive innovation, and make technology in the car safer and more intuitive for everyone," the group said. Its "open development model and common platform will allow automakers to more easily bring cutting-edge technology to their drivers, and create new opportunities for developers to deliver powerful experiences for drivers and passengers in a safe and scalable way."
