Microsoft hopes to see its new operating system on a billion devices someday.

According to a Microsoft blog post, 14 million devices were running Windows 10 within 24 hours after its release on July 29. The company plans to roll out the new OS in phases and hopes to see Windows 10 on 1 billion devices eventually. For the first year, the upgrade will be free for anyone running Windows 7 or 8.1.

"We are grateful for your excitement and enthusiasm and we appreciate your patience over the days and weeks ahead as we carefully roll out Windows 10 in phases to all of you that have reserved," said the blog post.

Akamai reported that the Internet experienced 35 percent more traffic than usual on July 29 during the first day of the Windows 10 release.
