Which Cloud Computing Service Is the Fastest?

Google Compute Engine does well on Java benchmarks.

Are the cloud computing services offered by the biggest vendors essentially the same or are there significant differences among them? To find out, Peter Wayner from InfoWorld ran a series of Java benchmarks on roughly comparable instances available through Amazon EC2, Google Compute Engine and Microsoft Windows Azure. Here's what he found:

  • The Google cloud was the fastest and the least expensive.
  • Microsoft Azure was the second fastest and the second least expensive.
  • In general, Amazon was the slowest and the most expensive, although its large instances were more competitive.
