New report holds bad news for the mobile development industry.

According to new research from Nomura, the top twenty apps saw their U.S. downloads plummet by around 20 percent last month. That includes popular apps like Whatsapp (down 7.6 percent), Facebook (down 14.9 percent), Pandora (down 35.8 percent) and YouTube (down 20.1 percent). The two biggest exceptions to the rule were Snapchat, which saw downloads increase by 109.9 percent, and Uber, which had an increase of 107.6 percent.

Outside the U.S. the picture is a little rosier, with downloads increasing an average of 3 percent.

Recode's Peter Kafka offers this piece of advice for those interested in breaking into mobile development: "You can still break through the saturated app market, if you are very, very, very lucky, and good. But the odds are stacked against you."
