Microsoft Visual Studio to End Support for UML

The company says no one is using the legacy modeling language.

Development tool vendors frequently make announcements about adding support for a new programming language, but Microsoft is taking the unusual step of discontinuing support for Unified Modeling Language (UML) in its Visual Studio IDE. After talks with its sales and technical support teams, the company determined that very few developers were using UML, which is a legacy platform for modeling application architecture. UML has been around since the 1990s.

"Removing a feature is always a hard decision, but we want to ensure that our resources are invested in features that deliver the most customer value," said Jean-Marc Prieur, senior program manager for Visual Studio.
