Any manufacturer can now build Windows Holographic devices.

At the Computex show, Microsoft executives announced that any manufacturer can now sell devices that run Windows Holographic, the platform that runs on Microsoft's HoloLens device. The company appears to be positioning Windows as the default platform for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), much as Windows became the default operating system for PCs.

"Many of today’s devices and experiences do not work with each other, provide different user interfaces, interaction models, input methods, peripherals and content," said Terry Myerson, executive vice president of the Windows and Device Group at Microsoft. Myerson positioned Windows Holographic as the solution to this problem, saying, "Windows is the only mixed reality platform."
