Recruiting firm Burtch Works LLC has released a new report with a surprising finding: data scientist salaries are levelling off and even decreasing. “For the first time in four years, salaries amongst individual contributor data scientists with 0-3 years’ experience decreased slightly,” the report said. “This is a marked difference because in every other year of our reports, these professionals were seeing the largest percentage gains in median base salaries. Salary increases have also begun to tail off for data scientists at other career levels.”

Data science has been called the “sexiest job of the 21st century,” thanks to strong demand and high salaries. All that publicity has enticed more developers and business analysts to boost their data science skills. The resulting flood of junior-level data scientists has led to the slight dip in average pay.

However, pay in the field is still relatively high. According to Burtch Works, junior-level data scientists make around $95,000 per year, while more experienced professionals can expect base salaries of $157,000.
