The U.S. is now the mobile development industry's number two market.

According to App Annie, Japan's monthly app store revenue exceeded that of the U.S. for the first time in October. Mobile development firms earned $350 million from Japanese consumers for the month—$200 million of that on the Android platform.

"If 2013 was the year where Japan's smartphone penetration caught up with the U.S., 2014 will be the year where it completely obliterates things," stated App Annie. "The impact this will have on app downloads and revenue is a mouth-watering prospect for businesses invested in that region of the world."

But before U.S. developers rush to translate their apps into Japanese, the report warns that all of the country's most successful apps are home grown.
