The Nexus 5 will be the first smartphone to feature the updated operating system.

On Thursday, Google unveiled Anroid 4.4 "KitKat" and the new Nexus 5 smartphone featuring the updated operating system. New features in KitKat include a redesigned interface, a Web-connected phone dialer, search within apps, improved speech recognition features, tighter integration with Google Now, HDR+ photo technology, wireless printing and storage improvements. The OS also will now fit in 512MB of RAM, meaning that it may soon appear on more low-end smartphones.

The updated OS is currently available to the mobile development industry, but end users who want to try it out right away will have to buy a Nexus 5 smartphone. The unlocked devices sell for $349 and $399 for the 16GB and 32GB versions, respectively.
