Only 7.5 percent of Android devices run the latest version of that operating system, Android Marshmallow, compared to 84 percent of iOS devices that run its latest version. That's a problem because it leaves user s vulnerable to security threats and it makes it difficult for mobile development firms to ensure that their apps will run on all Android devices.
According to a Bloomberg report, Google is seeking to alleviate these problems by pressuring device manufacturers and carriers to push out updates to users more quickly. It has reportedly ranked manufacturers based on their update track record, and it has shared that ranking with Android partners. It is also having discussions with partners about the fragmentation issue.
