Google engineers experimenting with artificial neural networks trained to do image recognition found that the systems can also create art and even "dream." The engineers blogged, "So here's one surprise: neural networks that were trained to discriminate between different kinds of images have quite a bit of the information needed to generate images too."
In some experiments, the neural networks changed images so that they looked like something else. For example, the AI changed pictures of clouds so that they looked more like birds and changed pictures of trees so that they looked like buildings. In another experiment the computers began to deliver "an endless stream of new impressions," which some people are referring to as "dreams."
