Google Adds Fragmentation Clause to Android SDK Terms

The company continues to wrestle with platform fragmentation.

Google has updated the Android software development kit (SDK) with a new sentence. It reads, "You agree that you will not take any actions that may cause or result in the fragmentation of Android, including but not limited to distributing, participating in the creation of, or promoting in any way a software development kit derived from the SDK."

The new addition is a little puzzling as it is generally smartphone and tablet manufacturers that are responsible for the fragmentation of the Android platform--not the mobile development industry.

Avi Greengart, research director at Consumer Devices, noted that Android fragmentation "continues to be a problem, both on smartphones and tablets." He added, "Google has talked about multiple initiatives for dealing with it, but none of them have successfully addressed it."
