Distimo has published a new report titled "Understanding the Secrets Behind App Store Category Dynamics," which delves into the details of revenue in the mobile development industry. It found that apps in the finance category saw a sharp increase in revenue between January and February—climbing 71 percent on Google Play and 42 percent in the App Store.
The report also noted that games still dominate, accounting for 90 percent of revenue on Google Play and 74 percent of revenue on the App Store. Among those games, 90 percent use the freemium revenue model.
Entertainment and sports apps also showed strong revenue and download growth, with the sports app popularity likely driven by the Winter Olympics. However, fitness app downloads declined slightly in February, which may reflect people abandoning their New Year's resolutions.
