The community edition of Greenplum is free for everybody, but EMC will charge people who run the database in production and want support.

This week, EMC announced the availability of a free Community Edition of the its Greenplum Database.

"It's free for research and development," EMC's CTO Luke Lonergan told ComputerWorld's Lucas Mearian. "If they go production and want support, then they have to pay license fee, which is per terabyte or PC core."

"The Community Edition can be downloaded as a pre-configured VMWare virtual appliance for use on laptops and desktops, or as a set of packages for deployment on user machines," reported Mearian.
