The cloud computing provider wants to be the hard drive of the post PC era.

At its first ever developers conference, DropBox is announcing some ambitious new plans as well as some new developer tools. “We are replacing the hard drive,” said Dropbox CEO Drew Houston. “I don’t mean that you’re going to unscrew your MacBook and find a Dropbox inside, but the spiritual successor to the hard drive is what we’re launching.”

As part of that plan, DropBox is launching two new plug-ins that will make it easier for Web and mobile developers to add DropBox support to their apps. Specifically, the plug-ins will allow app users to save content to their DropBox folders or share content from their DropBox folders.

In addition, DropBox is launching a new DataStore API that will make it easier for developers to store app data in the cloud. When app users switch from one device to another, the API will automatically sync their content. In other words, if you leave off playing a game on an iPad, you could pick up your Android smartphone and continue playing at exactly the same place.
